latrine2008/02/14 20:41 Witchcraft is also used to refer, narrowly, to the practice of magic in an exclusively inimical sense. If the community accepts magical practice in general, then there is typically a clear separation between witches (in this sense) and the terms used to describe legitimate practitioners.

EloraM232009/03/14 12:26 "Wicca" comes from the Old English word 4 "wise". It was first used 2 describe witchcraft by English occultist Gerald Gardner in the 1940's. They r thought of as wrinkly old hags but witches look like evry1 else. Although some perform ceremonies in the nude, most keep their clothes on. Salem in Massachusetts, USA is notorious 4 the 1692 witch trials. In total, 20 townspeople were executed. It's now a "witch city", with museums & events such as the annual witches' Halloween Ball. Witches don't ride broomsticks but they have long been used in pagan ceremonies.
EloraM232009/03/14 12:36 Wicca is inspired by the ancient pagan religions of northern Europe, as well as other faiths from around the world, it's a truly DIY religion. All Wiccans worship Mother Nature, or The Goddess, but after that it's really a free-4-all, with some sects recognising more male/female gods than u can shake a broomstick at.
