in 1891 world chess champion William Steinitz was playing chess with Russian Mikhail Chigorin by cable,sending moves in abberivated codes.
The New York police suspected he was spying for Russia and arrested him.

Interesting to know the paranoia between the US and Russia existed as far back as the 19th century. Hopefully they released him before too long.
