The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of murder by an appeals court, following his trial last year and a verdict of culpable homicide which carried a prison sentence of less than one year - widely criticised by legal experts and women's rights activists as too lenient.

Pistorius was convicted last year for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through his bathroom door, during an incident in which he claimed he thought it was an intruder he'd heard in there. He will now face sentencing for murder in the new year, where he is expected to receive a minimum sentence of 15 years minus time served.
