The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Every son of Adam sins, and the best of the sinners are the repentant.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi] A man once came to Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained, “The sky does not shower us with rain, what must we do?” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.” Then another person came to him and said, “I am very poor. I need wealth. What must I do?” He replied, “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.” Then another person came to him and complained, “My wife is barren; she cannot bear children. We want children, what must we do?” He replied, “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.” The people who were present, asked Imam Hasan al-Basri, “Each time a person came to you complaining about a different thing, yet you instructed them all the same, to seek Allah’s forgiveness?” The Imam said, “Have you not read the statement of Allah, ‘Pray to your Lord for your forgiveness. Indeed He is Very-Forgiving. And He will cause the heavens to rain upon you in abundance, and will help you with riches and sons, and will cause gardens to grow for you, and cause rivers to flow for you.’” [Surah Nuh, Ayaat 10-12]
