The problem with the X-men films/comics is they give an unrealistic expectation of genetic mutation - instead of being able to summon storms, throw portals or have telekentic control over metal, some people just get extra digits. Not the most exciting super-power ever and thus surely disappointing, but it still counts. There is actually an entire family in Brazil with one extra finger on each hand, and they do find it to be a benefit. This is a rare example of a mutation becoming established.
