Metroid Fusion
Format: Game Boy Advance (GBA)
Genre: platform adventure
Review: Samus Aran returns in one of the most highly-regarded games for the Game Boy Advance, a late entry in the chronology of the Metroid timeline. The game takes place aboard a space station that has been overrun with plasa-like parasites, which Samus is now immune to having narrowly recovered from an earlier infection. These floating parasites act as healing and weapon recharge power-ups after defeating monsters, of which there are many. The gameplay follows the familiar Metroid design of exploration, combat, completing objectives and upgrading your abilities to access new areas. However the story is more rich than in earlier Metroid titles, with an unfolding intrigue as Samus completes the missions communicated to her by the station's computer. Most eerily, she is stalked by a darkly familiar enemy with overwhelming powers, while she still has to fully recover hers. An intense and atmospheric space adventure.

Demon's Crest
Format: Super NES
Genre: Platform Adventure
Review: A spin-off of the Gargoyles Quest games on Nintendo's 8-bit consoles, this takes the unique gameplay of the original titles and manages to make it even more unique. You play as Firebrand, a gargoyle with the ability to cling to the side of walls and fly for a few seconds at a time, as well as spit fire projectiles at enemies. The game is set in a creepy land called the Ghoul Realm, which is full of strange creatures and platform environments. The levels are a blend of action, boss battles, exploration and seeking new powers and life upgrades - similar in some ways to Super Metroid, though less intense. Indeed, this is not the hardest game ever, but it offers enough challenge to make it enjoyable. If this is your first time playing as Firebrand you may be impressed by how good the controls are. There are also sections of the game where you can talk to other characters and mini games too, though these are merely sideshows to the platform action. The music is another high point of the game and compliments the atmosphere nicely. Overall this title comes highly recommended, and is ideal for playing on a mobile.

Actraiser
Format: Super NES
Genre: Platform adventure/God sim
Review: Actraiser is a game of two halves. Most of the action takes place in traditional side-scrolling platform levels where you get to beat up monsters with your sword. These are challenging and enjoyable enough in themselves and play very well. As well as that, there is an overhead view mode in which you help the people of the land by basically playing as God. This is done with the help of an angel who occasionally also has to shoot flying enemies. These sections aren't too challenging but add much depth to the game. It is possible to make mistakes too so you have to pay attention. Overall this is a novel and impressive game that's recommended all round.

Super Mario RPG - Legend of the 7 Stars
Format: Super NES
Genre: RPG
Review: This is Mario, but not as we know it. Prepare to immerse yourself in the world of the Mushroom Kingdom more than ever before in this absorbing adventure. As suggested by the title it is a role playing game, which means levelling-up, turn-based battles and collecting items. It's produced by Square too which is promising in itself. Entering battles happens in a similar way to that in Chrono Trigger, in that all enemies are on-screen and the game only switches to the battle screen when you make contact with them. It has to be said that the battles generally aren't very challenging. Sure, there are a couple of tough boss fights and you have to stay on your toes, but those who are already RPG veterans will be left feeling unsatisfied. On the plus side it's very much a Mario game which any fan will appreciate, and as an introduction to RPGs this is a great game for younger players.
