Taking beliefs for facts is what we get our morals from. That’s why there are so-called good moral citizens who think they have this universal truth that prostitues are bad women, and lynch mobs who want to kill either pedophiles, or ‘non-believers’ who don’t subscribe to the established God or Allah. The ‘facts’ we know usually of course are the ones which make us the good people; we don’t ask which kind of rotten human society produces sick people who abuse children, makes women live in undignified conditions, or thinks that a religious belief justifies crime. We don’t want to hear that our facts are just beliefs and opinions because that would upset our convenient edifice of a world in which we are always justified.
