Internet giant Google may be soon
expanding its portfolio to include a new
phone service. According to a report in
Washington Post, Google has sent out
invitations to an experimental telephone
service to some of its high-speed
internet subscribers.
. . The report quotes two people who have
received the invitations. The invites
reportedly have been circulating for over
a month to members of the Google Fiber
Trusted Tester program. The programme
involves Fiber subscribers who have
opted to try new and potential changes
to their service.
. . According to the report, "The service,
known as Google Fiber Phone, closely
resembles another Google product,
Google Voice. That application lets
users link all of their various
telephones, including landline and
mobile devices, to a single phone
number. Fiber Phone comes with Google
Voice features, such as voicemail
transcriptions and automatic call
screening based on the time of day."
The Washington Post report further
notes, "it wouldn't be much of a leap for
Google to begin offering its broadband
subscribers bundled access to Project
Fi, Google's recently launched cellular
service that hops between Sprint, T-
Mobile and WiFi. As many cable
companies mull an entry into the
competitive wireless market, it appears
Google may already be positioning itself
to get ahead of them."
. . Incidentally, Google's parent company
Alphabet Inc surpassed Apple Inc as the
most valuable company in the United
States in after-hours trading on Monday,
knocking the iPhone maker from the top
spot that it has held for the better part
of four years.
. . After reporting strong quarterly
earnings, the company said that among
its 'other bets', it had spent the most
capital on Google Fiber, its high-speed
broadband service.
. . Google includes its search engine,
YouTube and related parts of the
company, while a unit called 'Other Bets'
includes its 'moonshots' such as self-
driving cars, and encompasses Google
Capital, the secretive X research division
and Nest, which offers smart-home
accessories...
