Monkeys and other animals closely related to ourselves are tortured in laboratories in rich countries in the name of medical science or even cosmetics. Lions, birds and other animals are bred only to be shot dead by cowardly hunters. Donkeys are made to carry heavy loads and forced to work to exhaustion and collapse in hot, dry climates.
Chickens spend their entire lives in cramped sheds waiting for the day they'll be slaughtered. Cows are kept constantly pregnant and given hormones to produce a great deal more milk than nature intended, and their male calves are torn away from them at birth to be slaughtered as waste products. The production of red meat is one of the greatest contributors to cancer, greenhouse gases and climate change, but continues on an industrial scale. Lobsters and other crustaceans are boiled alive as delicacies, and whales continue to be hunted despite an international ban.
