Oscar Pistorius verdict changed to murder by NinthElement 2015/12/03 18:18
The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of murder by an appeals court, following his trial last year and a verdict of culpable homicide which carried a prison sentence of less than one year - widely criticised by legal experts and women's rights activists as too lenient.

Pistorius was convicted last year for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through his bathroom door, during an incident in which he claimed he thought it was an intruder he'd heard in there. He will now face sentencing for murder in the new year, where he is expected to receive a minimum sentence of 15 years minus time served.

To me he is guilty. By firing through the door into a small room he must have known he was likely to kill whoever was in there, which is something the appeal judge acknowledged today. And I'm not at all convinced he didn't know it was Reeva.

I agree with you. And why did she hide from him and locked herself up in the bathroom.

So much can happen in one day. So much can go wrong in a moment and a promising young man will never be young again but a promising young women will never see another day. So very sad./smiley

correct, he hit the bathroom door several times with the bat trying to break it open.

The result is disappointing to say the least. He was found guilty of murder, no? In that country this normally carries a minimum sentence of fifteen years for a first offense of its nature, the facts of the case however point firmly towards aggravated murder which normally carries a sentence of life imprisonment.

This is not a fast and hard rule, discretion is given to the sentencing judge but even so how precisely they arrive at six years for aggravated murder is beyond me. It is 19 years fewer than the minimum recommended sentence for the crime committed. This is not justice.
