VE Day - 8 May 1945 by Xiao Zen 2015/05/08 21:22
" My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class ... I say that in the long years to come not only will the people of this island but of the world, wherever the bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we've done and they will say 'do not despair, do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straightforward and die if need be-unconquered.' " - 08 May 1945, Winston S Churchill.

It is the 70th anniversary of victory in Europe against Nazi Germany, rather than merely pay lip service and attend parades I would hope that world leaders most especially in the countries most involved in the fighting would learn lessons from history and act to avoid instead of hasten towards another global conflict, there is no other way to honour those many millions who gave their lives and those who had their lives taken from them.

Enjoy your VE Day celebrations but also remember what exactly it is that you are celebrating and take a minute to honour those who made it possible. - 08 May 2015, Opium.

Wasn't there protesting in London? People don't learn from history. They become worse... They deface significant memorials on VE day. Typical human nature.

But yes... Lovely post.

The protest was an anti-austerity / anti-Tory demonstration, yes a profanity was spray painted onto the women's war memorial and I hear many were injured in confrontations with police following the incident.
