Defiant European Newspapers republish Cartoon of Muhammad.
European news organizations challenged attempts to intimidate the press by publishing controversial cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad across front pages today, following the deadly attack at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
From Britain’s Guardian newspaper and Berlin’s Tagesspiegel, to best-selling Czech daily Blesk and Spain’s El Pais, Europe’s news groups honored their murdered colleagues by republishing the cartoons central to yesterday’s assault, which left 12 dead, including eight journalists.
“We publish the satire of Charlie Hebdo out of respect for the murder victims who were defending the freedom of opinion,†Berliner Zeitung said. “We do it for freedom of the press and of expression, for freedom of the arts and freedom of religion.â€
The Financial Times published a number of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons on its website, including one of Muhammad holding up his hand warning: “100 Lashes If You Don’t Die of Laughter.†The Times of London used the images in today’s newspaper.

I think that whatever your feelings or sensitivities about these cartoons, it's right that people should be able to see exactly what these journalists, artists and police officers were killed for. What we have to be careful of is that freedom of expression retains its innocence, and doesn't in anger become what it has been accused of by some in these cartoons, i.e. a form of discrimination.

sat·ire ˈsaˌtī(ə)r/: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. Synonyms: mockery, ridicule, derision, scorn, caricature .. Pro-Charlie or Anti-Charlie comes down to personal opinion and ideology for the most part but regardless of where ones sympathies lie I don't think a case can be made for it being "innocent". Satire, any satire not just this one mind you, is by definition and purpose anything but innocent. Not that satire in general is always a negative thing it can be very positive, its just never an innocent thing.
Maybe playful is a closer adjective to what I mean than innocent. While appreciating the biting nature of satire, its goals are generally to shine a spotlight on areas of hypocrisy or foolishness in life that might otherwise go unchallenged (particularly things perceived to be taken too seriously). Most forms of humour have an element of cruelty and satire is a prime example of this, but it is more about making a political point through being amusing or thought-provoking than being malicious. Anyway my point was we want to ensure free expression in art retains that quality, rather than devolving into caricatures of fear and loathing as has happened in the past when a whole section of society starts to become unfairly blamed for things going wrong, or existing satire being used to provoke people more extensively than was intended by the creators.

First of all I dont understand why this attack? No muslim claims to have seen mohamad and none of them posses any image of him or muslim god allah, so how can any of them ever mocked?
