Mount St. Helens by Xiao Zen 2013/09/09 16:21
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in Skamania County, Washington (US). Its part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a group of 160 active volcanoes.

Mount St. Helen is most famous for its May 18, 1980 eruption, the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in North American history. 57 people, 7000 big game animals (deer, elk and bears) and 12 000 000 fish were killed & 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways and 185 miles of highway were destroyed in that 1 eruption.

The smoke column was 16 miles above sea level, depositing ash as far away as Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). The eventual eruption released 24 megatons of thermal energy, reducing the volcanoes height by 1300 feet and ripping open a 2 mile crater on the northern side.

Jimmy Carter, The US President at the time said: "Someone said this area looked like a moonscape. But the moon looks more like a golf course compared to what's up there." The day after the disaster.

2 years later US congress declared 110 000 acres around the volcano a protected area and was nature was allowed to reclaim the area. The Volcano remains active to this day.
