The area of origin of cocoa is in Central America, and the plant was introduced into West Africa in the latter half of the 19th century (in Ghana by Tetteh Kwashie from Fernando Po). It is one of the main economic tree crops of Ghana,Nigeria, Cameroons, Cote D'lvoire, The Republic of Benin and Togo and it grows in the lowland forest zone of these countries. So successful has been the introduction of this crop that many thousands of farmers in Ghana and Nigeria are involved in its cultivation, which is normally on small farm holdings, except for a few government plantations. At the moment, Cote D'lvoire is the main producer of cocoa beans, with Ghana the second in importance in world production. Cocoa is very important in the economy of these two countries. It contributes about 60% of the export trade of Ghana and 10% of that of Nigeria. Its importance as a major foreign exchange earner in Nigeria is now dwindling due to the booming petroleum industry. Cocoa beans are exported mainly to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the USSR. Cocoa is grown mainly in Mampong, Kumasi, Bekwai, Goaso, Sefwi, Axim and Sunyani areas of Ghana and in many part of Western Nigeria. The so-called cocoa belt includes parts of Ogun, Oyo, and Ondo states. Cocoa also grows well in the northern part of the Benin area of the Bendel state and the Bende and lkom areas of eastern Nigeria. Cocoa beans are mainly used in the manufacture of chocolate, which is used in the confectionery industry in the manufacture of sweets. Hybrids: it is produced by cross-pollination between Upper Amazon and Amelando or Amazon Trinitario.. Soil requirement: well drained, clayeh friable, red to brownish deep soil with high content of organic matter. Climate: Cocoa thrives best in areas with an annual rainfall of about 1140mm. It is mainly cultivated in the forest areas. Method of propagation: Mainly by seeds Budding and stem cutting are also used. Time of planting: (i) nursery planting: December-January (ii) transplanting to the field April-June.. "AFRICAN CLUB"
