Inside the kelp forest by Emo_CutE_GiRl_ 2013/07/20 15:17
Kelp forests are like the coral reefs of colder waters, providing a very productive marine ecosystem that forms thebasis of food webs for many fish and other marine life. And like corals reefs, scientists fear that CO2 levels couldthreaten the health of these marine forests.
A recent study highlights that one important step to minimize the damage caused by higher CO2 levels could be to make an effort to reduce nutrient pollution - from agriculture, wastewater discharge and stormwater on urban costs - which is already know to damage kelp population. In particular, their results suggest that the combined damage caused by both nutrient pollution and high CO2 levels was greater than the sum of their individual impacts.
The researchers grew kelp in experimental tanks floating in the North Haven Boat Harbour, with different combinations of added nutrients and CO2, and measured the growth of turf algae (which is a precursor to kelp forest loss as turf algae grows is displaces kelp). In one experiment where they removed the nutrients but kept CO2 high, after six months the amount of turf algae had been reduced by 75%.

So the bottom line, according to the researchers, is that not only would reducing nutrient pollution help improve kelp forest health now, it would also help protect it in the event that CO2 levels keep rising.
What are your thoughts?
