THE CAT FAMILY by Laketempest 2010/11/25 12:38
Can you believe that lions and tigers, leopards and cheetahs, jaguars, mountain lions, ocelots, and lynx all belong to the cat family? These cats live in different places. They are not the same size or color. But there are many things about cats that are the same. All cats eat meat. A house cat purrs when it is happy. So does the puma, lynx, bobcat, and ocelot. Lions and tigers cannot purr, they roar. Jaguars and Leopards make coughing or barking sounds!

They are very fast and can jump long distances. Lions sleep as much as nineteen hours a day. When the sun sets, they hunt for food. Often lions hunt in groups of four or eight. A mother lion has from two to four babies, called cubs. At birth, their fur is spotted. Cubs drink their mother's milk. Baby lions are very playful. When the babies are one-and-one-half years old, the mother lion begins to teach them to hunt. A Lion cub has all it's teeth when it is three months old.
